Roadmap Report for Building Automation-Enabled Multi-Modal Logistics Networks to Rural and Tribal Communities

While sixty-eight percent of America's road miles are in rural areas, rural communities face severe logistics challenges that urban centers do not experience. Despite freight-intensive activity across these corridors, twenty percent of Americans live in rural areas, but only 37% of rural residents have access to delivery services from major providers. The economics of last-mile delivery create a stark divide, as urban deliveries average around $10 per package while rural deliveries can reach $50 due to lower population density and longer distances. Because last-mile delivery burns through 53% of total shipping costs, carriers frequently add remote fuel surcharges ranging from $8.85 to $16.50, further burdening rural residents and local economies. To solve these inefficiencies along the I-40 and I-35 corridors, this project provides the analytical foundation necessary to deploy autonomous logistics solutions. The methodology integrates multi-layered geospatial modeling using ArcGIS Pro and R Studio to analyze supply networks, economic demand, and automation opportunities. By synthesizing Census demographics, logistics facility data, and industry partner insights from entities like Aurora Hubs and Lineage Logistics, the project pinpoints specific bottleneck segments. The primary deliverable is an interactive Story Map that maps actionable deployment zones to guide future autonomous freight interventions—such as drone deliveries and automated truck convoys—across rural and tribal communities.
