Digital Infrastructure to Support AV Trucking

A major hurdle for real-world autonomous vehicle operation involves dynamic conditions, particularly rare road events that push vehicles outside their operating design domain. In conversations with AV truck companies like Aurora, the two most critical challenges highlighted are work zones or roadway incidents and poor weather conditions. Currently, AV operators must act exceptionally risk-averse; if there is even a slight chance of ice on the road, they cannot operate and are forced to rely on general weather forecasts. Furthermore, unexpected events like road closures, crashes, detours, and the presence of emergency responders impose sudden operational friction. Scheduled for late 2026 along Oklahoma’s I-35 or I-40 corridors, this demonstration focuses on advancing digital infrastructure to support AV trucking operations. The centerpiece of the demo is a cloud-based data exchange that ingests and fuses multi-source sensor data to produce machine-readable information on real-time road states. Field hardware deployed for the project will include smart barrels to transmit work zone data alongside on-road sensors and cameras designed to detect active snow, wind, and ice. Ultimately, this standardized national road-state data feed provides the real-time visibility needed for automated freight operators to navigate dynamic hazards safely.
