Autonomous UAV Emergency Response
Approximately 40,000 fatal crashes occur annually in the United States, and rapid emergency medical response is critical for severe trauma survival. However, because trauma centers are concentrated in metropolitan areas, rural roadway crashes fall into a significant medical blind spot. While ambulances reach urban crash sites in an average of 12 minutes, they take an average of 22 minutes in rural areas, exceeding the critical "Golden Time" threshold of 17 minutes. In fact, only 60% of rural crashes fall within the Golden Time window compared to 90% of urban incidents. To bridge this life-saving gap, this project deploys an Autonomous Emergency Response UAV for point-to-point medical kit delivery. Assuming the accident site’s GPS coordinates are acquired via a 911 call, the drone will execute an autonomous flight from its base to the crash site. The mission utilizes the Spector Heavy-lift Delivery Drone, which features an 8-pound payload capacity, a 3-mile range, and a 25-minute flight endurance. Payload contents are curated based on consultations with emergency physicians, while concurrent research studies optimal drone pre-positioning density and the level of virtual or physical paramedic support required on site.
