Art Kaufman
Art Kaufman is Vice President for Community Health and former Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, which has a Family Medicine Residency program and Physician Assistant program. Dr. Kaufman's Department has trained a sizeable percentage of New Mexico’s primary care workforce, distributed in almost all counties in the state. He has helped create a set of primary care innovations in education and service. These include creation of the UNM Care Program—assignment of uninsured patients to primary care medical homes; the Primary Care Dispatch—a web-based, emergency room located primary care follow-up appointment system that functions 24/7; a statewide, 24/7 Nurse Advice Line for all residents in rural and urban areas; a network of Health Commons primary care sites which serve as advanced models of Patient-Centered Medical Homes including community outreach and public health integration; deploying a cadre of field-based community health workers to manage patients enrolled in Medicaid Managed Care who are high users of health resources; and the creation of Health Extension Rural Offices models across the state linking University resources to priority community health needs. Research outcomes of each of these programs has been published in peer-reviewed journals
